Community Midwives

Our Midwife, Ann Fernie works with colleagues from the Galashiels - Melrose area. She provides clinics locally in the Health Centre and at home as appropriate to individual needs.

The midwives are happy to hear first from women who are pregnant rather than them contacting the surgery.

Community Nurses

Based at the Health Centre, the Community Nursing Team comprises 2 district nurses: Julie Cleland and Carol Morison, 1 staff nurse: Babe Charters, and an Auxiliary Nurse Allyson Hulme.

Patients referred to the service will be assessed by a nurse and the most appropriate team member will provide care.

The nurses are available daily between 8.30am and 4.30pm and they will arrange an out of hours visit if they consider this appropriate.

Health Visitors

The Health Visitors are qualified nurses with specialist training in public health, child development and the promotion of good health. They are Lynne Scott and Joyce Stenhouse supported by Karen Luke the Nursery Nurse for the Health visiting team.

Their role as Public Health Practitioners incorporates community needs assessments and the provision of developmental screening, health promotion and healthy living activities. They are available to the entire practice population for advice on all aspects of health.

Attached Staff

School Nurse

The School Nurse is Jan Grieve who has nine schools within her remit. Knowepark, Philiphaugh, St Josephs, Yarrow, Kirkhope, Ettrick, Lilliesleaf & Caddonfoot and Selkirk High School.

During the School year she carries out health surveillance for all Primary One entrants and Primary 7's, immunisations at relevant stages, eye tests, leaver's health checks and health eductaion.

Speech Therapy

Patients may be referred to the Speech and Language therapy team by their GP or Health Visitor.


Lindsay Wilson is our physiotherapist. If you require physiotherapy you can either self refer (please ask for a form at reception) or your GP can refer you.

Antenatal / Postnatal physio classes are held 10am to 12 noon on Tuesdays.


Katie Aitken is our Podiatrist, details on making an appointment are available from the reception.

Doing Well Adviser

Linda Ruthven, our Doing Well Adviser provides advice to patients referred to her by the GP's.

Lifestyle Adviser

Marie Barton is our Lifestyle Adviser. She can advise on a number of health issues including diet, exercise, alcohol and smoking. Your GP can refer you if required.

Smoking Cessation Clinic

We have a drop in clinic on Thursday 9.30-10.30 run by Freda Robertson.
